Overview
The Surge 2 is the successor to the third-person action game The Surge.
Players explore a vast urban environment, a city center and it's surrounding districts that fell into chaos. The game features improved enemy AI behaviors, a set of new gameplay features and much more diverse and open environments to explore.
Iterated Design Process
With this project we proactively made considerable changes to the internal workflows of the level team to make use of learnings from the production of the first game. Our new approach set out to create a more interconnected design and implementation process between Environment Art and Game Design with the goal of creating an even more complex and consistent game world.
Responsibility and Ownership
As part of the level team I worked closely with our 3D environment artists on almost all parts of the game from first concept, through design and iteration stages to final implementation.
During early development I contributed to concept & design of the overall game world and took part in the early level workflow of most areas of the game. We created proof-of-concept paper drafts and implemented level blockings to prototype gameplay and combat as early as possible.
Soon I took ownership of 4 major levels including the "Hub world" Jericho Downtown, the most complex level connecting all other parts of the game.
Throughout production I then lead development of all level-related gameplay content in my areas of ownership, including level layouts, game mechanics/interactions, scripted sequences, cutscenes and combat encounters.
Additionally I owned the design & implementation of our successful gameplay demo area that was showcased at our publishers official press event "What's Next du Focus" and at Gamescom in 2018 respectively.
Acknowledgement
To acknowledge my personal development and accomplishments during the production of The Surge 2, Deck13 Interactive GmbH offered me a role as Lead Level Designer to develop and grow the level team and our level production workflows in future.
