Overview
The Surge is a third-person action game set in the dystopian close-future of planet earth. Its hardcore combat-focused gameplay challenges players around the globe to explore its vast but deadly game world.
New workflows
I joined the team at Deck13 Interactive GmbH during full production of The Surge and not only found myself challenged by working on a way bigger project than ever before, I also had to figure out the proprietary engine (Fledge Engine) that powers the game. Thanks to my prior knowledge working with various game engines and due to the remarkable collaboration within my team I was able to settle in and support the project with everything I have to offer.
Production Work
Very soon I took over ownership of 2 major levels of the game, working on tasks ranging from implementation and iteration of gameplay spaces, combat encounters and player interactions to design and implementation of cutscenes, quests and dialogues. The scale of this project allowed me to try out and learn new things but also to expand on my experience in game design and scripting.
Final Delivery, Acknowledgement
During the final weeks of development all of us practiced a lot of flexibility while iterating and polishing all areas of the game. In the end our effort was rewarded when The Surge won 3 German Developer Awards in the categories "Best German Game", "Best PC/Console Game" and "Best Graphics".
To pass on the support and hospitality I was met with at Deck13 I am regularly taking part in the application procedure for the game design team and took on the responsibility of guiding and teaching our interns and new team members.
